OIC Warns of Potential Regional Escalation
JEDDAH: The Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) has issued a stark warning that the killing of Hamas political leader Ismail Haniyeh could ignite a broader conflict in the Middle East. Speaking at a meeting on Wednesday, Gambian Foreign Minister Mamadou Tangara, the current chair of the OIC, emphasized the heightened risk of escalating tensions across the region.
Iran Blames Israel, Calls for Defense
The meeting was called by Iranian and Palestinian officials following Haniyeh’s death last week in Tehran, which Iran attributes to Israel. Iran’s acting Foreign Minister, Ali Bagheri, addressed the OIC, stating that Iran might need to defend itself against Israel’s actions. Bagheri remarked, “In the absence of any appropriate action by the UN Security Council against the aggressions of the Israeli regime, the Islamic Republic of Iran has no choice but to use its inherent right to legitimate defense.”
Impact on the Palestinian Cause
Tangara underscored that Haniyeh’s killing would not suppress the Palestinian cause but rather amplify the call for justice and human rights for Palestinians. He stated, “This heinous act serves only to escalate existing tensions, potentially leading to a wider conflict that could involve the entire region.”
Hezbollah Vows Retaliation
In response to Haniyeh’s death, Hezbollah, a Lebanese ally of Hamas, has vowed to retaliate. The group also seeks to avenge the killing of its military commander Fuad Shukr, who died in an Israeli strike in Beirut.
Previous OIC and Arab League Condemnations
The OIC has a history of condemning the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas. The conflict, which began with Hamas’s October 7 raids in southern Israel, has led to Israeli bombardment of Gaza, resulting in nearly 40,000 civilian deaths. The OIC and Arab League leaders had previously convened in November to denounce Israel’s actions in Gaza.
Bilateral Meetings on the Sidelines
On the sidelines of the OIC meeting, Deputy Prime Minister Mohammad Ishaq Dar met with Malaysia’s Foreign Minister Dato’ Seri Utama Haji Mohamad. The two leaders reaffirmed their commitment to enhancing bilateral relations and cooperation. Dar also held discussions with Iran’s Acting Foreign Minister Ali Bagheri Kani, focusing on regional issues and developments in the Middle East.
