Thousands Evacuated as Wildfires Rage Near Athens: International Aid Deployed

Wildfires Reach Athens Suburbs

Thousands of residents have been forced to evacuate their homes as fierce wildfires blaze through the suburbs of Athens, Greece. The fires have reached areas including Varnavas and northeastern Athens, with some flames rising up to 25 meters (80 feet). A school in Nea Penteli has also been affected by the blaze.

Firefighting Efforts and Challenges

As night fell, aircraft used to combat the fires had to land, leaving ground crews to continue the battle. Residents have reported a shortage of fire trucks and firefighters. In response, Greek authorities have accepted international aid, and additional support is being provided by countries such as Spain, Italy, Turkey, Romania, Canada, France, and the Czech Republic.

Dangerous Conditions and Evacuations

The fire service has warned that conditions for new fires remain hazardous and will continue to be dangerous in the coming days. Thick smoke has blanketed Athens, causing residents to wear masks to protect themselves. A coordinated effort involving firefighters, volunteers, and citizens is working to control the fires, using whatever resources are available, including tree branches.

Strong winds are exacerbating the situation by spreading burning pine cones, further fueling the fires. Emergency messages have been sent to residents in northern Athens suburbs, advising them to evacuate towards safer areas.

Ongoing Threats and International Assistance

Despite no active fire front being reported, hotspots remain, particularly in Mount Penteli and Lake Marathon. Over 700 firefighters, 119 vehicles, and numerous soldiers have been deployed, with further help expected to arrive soon. The wildfires have also led to the evacuation of three hospitals and are threatening significant sites like the National Observatory of Athens and a timber factory containing hazardous materials.

Explosions from fuel tanks and gas cylinders have been heard in affected areas, adding to the urgency of the situation. The international community continues to provide support to address this devastating crisis.
