“Chandigarh Records Coldest Night of the Season at 6.8°C; Rain Expected to Provide Relief”

Chandigarh witnessed sunny weather on Saturday, but the previous night saw the minimum temperature drop to 6.8°C, marking the coldest night so far this season. The temperature fell from 7.9°C on Friday to 6.8°C on Saturday, which is 3.7°C below the normal minimum temperature for this time of year. The temperature also approached last year’s lowest December temperature of 6°C, recorded on December 16 and 21.

IMD Forecasts Relief with Rain on the Way

Despite the sharp temperature dip, relief may be in sight. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), rain is expected in Chandigarh on Sunday and Monday, thanks to the arrival of a Western Disturbance (WD). This weather system is expected to bring light rainfall, which will increase moisture in the air and may lead to the formation of fog in the region.

The Role of Western Disturbance and Weather Changes

IMD Chandigarh Director Surender Paul explained that the fresh WD will likely raise the minimum temperature slightly in the coming days. He added that even if Chandigarh does not experience rain, the moisture in nearby areas will still affect the weather. After this brief warming, however, winter temperatures are expected to fall again by Tuesday, with Northwesterly winds bringing a significant drop in temperatures.

No Fog Yet, But Smog and Changing Weather Ahead

The city has not yet experienced its first fog spell this season. Although smog was observed in November, which has a hazy appearance and a foul odor, fog is yet to form. However, the presence of higher moisture levels in the air could result in dense fog in the coming weeks.

Weather Outlook and Air Quality Index (AQI)

As the weather continues to evolve, snowfall is expected in the upper reaches of Himachal Pradesh and Kashmir, which could further lower temperatures in Chandigarh. The maximum temperature in the city increased slightly from 23.9°C on Friday to 24.6°C on Saturday, though still 0.3°C below normal. The AQI on Saturday stood at 181, categorized as moderate, but rain could significantly improve air quality, which has remained above the 100 AQI mark since November 1.

Key Highlights:

  • Coldest night of the season at 6.8°C.
  • Rain expected on Sunday and Monday.
  • Western Disturbance brings moisture and potential fog.
  • Air Quality Index (AQI) at 181, moderate.

Chandigarh is set to experience a dynamic weather pattern in the coming days, with fluctuations in temperature and possible rainfall to ease the current cold snap.
