In a landmark policy push to streamline specialized healthcare access across India, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare alongside the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) officially operationalized the National Digital Rare Disease Registry and Supply Chain Network on October 23, 2026. The integrated digital health platform connects designated tertiary care hospitals, orphan drug manufacturers, and regional genetic screening centers to accelerate early diagnosis and ensure transparent distribution of life-saving therapies for patients suffering from rare genetic disorders. Under the new operational guidelines, registered patients will benefit from expedited digital approvals for government financial assistance schemes, automated inventory tracking for imported enzyme replacement drugs, and direct access to multi-specialty tele-consultation boards. Healthcare policy analysts, clinical geneticists, and patient advocacy groups commended the initiative, noting that establishing a unified digital infrastructure eliminates administrative delays, lowers out-of-pocket medical expenses, and ensures equitable access to cutting-edge genomic treatments for vulnerable families across both urban and rural centers.
